El Paso Rhinos 2018 Thorne Cup Champions

by Laura Cisneros

The Ogden Mustangs went into the Throne Cup Final game with an unbeatable record. Statistics would have them favored as the winners. The El Paso Rhinos, with only two wins for the entire tournament, went into a final that tested their endurance, and ambition to win and bring the cup home. The Rhinos earned their spot in the finals after beating the Icecats four to zero in the semifinals. The Rhinos were able to pull forward by one goal, beating the Mustangs three to two earning themselves the title of the Western States Hockey League Thorne Cup Champions of 2018. Leeam Tivers (F) who put his team in the lead 2-1 in the third period describes the win as unreal.

“Words can’t describe how we all feel right now after all the sacrifices we all made this year” Said Tivers.

Tivers said scoring a goal in the finals was special because his parents were in attendance he would also like to dedicate the championship to the city of El Paso, the fans, his billet, Gustavo Reveles, his parents, brother and family and friends back home in British Columbia.  Nikita Pintusov (F) who scored the game winning goal says he dedicates the win to his family, teammates, billet family and the fans.

“It feels amazing as soon as I got here the boys really embraced me as a player and let me know there was only one goal for the season and that’s a Thorne cup” Says Pintusov.
